B1 Speaking and Listening Test
What is the B1 Speaking & Listening Test?
The B1 Speaking and Listening test is part of the UK’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) qualifications. It checks your ability to communicate in English at an intermediate (B1) level.

Speaking Test: Face-to-face with an examiner; assessed on fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Listening Test: Three parts, testing comprehension of everyday English.
Assessment Criteria
You’ll be marked on:

Accuracy → Grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Fluency → Smooth, coherent speech without long pauses.

Vocabulary → Range and relevance of words used.

Interactive Skills → Engaging in conversation, asking & answering questions.

Listening Comprehension → Understanding main ideas & details in spoken English.

Who Needs This Test?
London PHV Drivers

TfL requires PHV drivers to prove their English skills (equivalent to B1 CEFR).

Assessment = 15–20 min conversation via secure video/phone link.

Conducted by PeopleCert, a TfL-approved provider.

You must pass to get or renew your licence.
British Citizenship Applicants

A mandatory step in the UK Citizenship Course.

Required for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and naturalisation.

Speaking (15 min): Describe everyday topics, express opinions, answer questions.

Listening (25 min): Audio recording with multiple-choice and short answers.
